Synopsis
"In 1860s California, a fiercely independent French Canadian woman (Krieps) becomes involved with a Danish immigrant (Mortensen), before he sets out to fight for the Union in the American Civil War. While alone, she faces numerous hardships, not least from the tearaway son of a local landowner. Written and directed by Mortensen, who also composed the film’s elegiac score, the film unfolds as a stoic anti-western, defying long-held conventions of the genre, examining the frontier struggle of immigrants as they carve out a new definition of American identity.
