Synopsis
Dubbed one of the greatest horror films of all time, The Wicker Man actually contains very little in the way of violence and gore. Instead, this story of a policeman who encounters an unknown evil while searching for a missing girl on a remote Scottish island gets under your skin by being an eerie, outlandish and weirdly musical odyssey that instils dread using elements of pagan folklore and the terror of isolation. Featuring one of the most memorable finales in the history of cinema, it pioneered the ‘folk horror’ genre, which includes Ari Aster’s Midsommar and Na Hong-jin’s The Wailing .It also inspired a so-bad-it’s-good 2006 cult classic remake starring Nicolas Cage, and Edgar Wright’s meta-comedy Hot Fuzz.
